I'm ashamed to say that I've lived in Chicago for twelve years, and only this past week made my first trip to Bucket O Blood Books and Records. I know it's been here the whole time - and that in the past year it moved to a much more convenient location (for me) ironically a five minute walk from the office where I spent a good 2.5 years of my life in the Windy City.
But! Seeing as how I'm releasing an old west take on DRACULA tomorrow, it felt like the right time to visit. Better late than never!
This store is lovely, which is a strange thing to say about a store that specializes in horror/sci-fi/fantasy/mystery books. But it is. It's almost elegant in the layout, the stacks are full of great finds in all represented genres, and it's absolutely a place you could spend a half-hour just browsing happily.
I had a great time wandering this store. I marveled at the abundance of Stephen King and Agatha Christie, and my husband checked out the vinyl selection. Kiddo came with us, and had a good time spotting the monsters and horror figures around the store.
I walked out with two new and unexpected reads - Anne McCaffrey's DRAGONFLIGHT and THE AUTUMN CASTLE by Kim Wilkins. Both look fantastic, and if I wasn't two inches away from releasing MINA I'd be done with the latter book by now.
The store is easily accessible by the Belmont and California busses, and not a terrible walk from the Belmont blue line stop. There's no coffee located right nearby, but if you want a killer burger, Kuma's Corner is a skip away.
Hell yes, I will return to Bucket O Blood. I loved it. :)
