I went, I mingled, I came home with books. :)
A few weeks ago, I had the great pleasure to be one of the attending authors at the first Rust City Book Con, held in the Detroit area and dedicated to genre fiction readers and writers. Being a first year con, the gathering wasn't huge, but it was certainly made up of a good number of devoted readers and talented writers.
I took part in panels about surprises in Historical research (where I shared my recent discovery of the US Camel Corps!), creating unforgettable characters, and writing for anthologies/serials. When I wasn't on-panel, I popped into a few panels and spent a long time perusing and buying books by other Rust City authors.
Getting to meet and talk with great writers like Gina Conkle, Colleen Gleason, Donna MacMeans, Sara Dobie Bauer, Sylvia Hubbard, Linda Bradley, and fellow Limitless authors CK Brooke and AJ Norris (see the pic!), was a true joy. Some of the best parts of cons aren't the scheduled events, but the spontaneous meet-ups at the hotel bar for relaxation and discussion. I got to meet a bunch of readers, and was armed with a special 99 cent sale on a few books, so I think it put my books in the hands of the kinds of readers I write for.
Rust City 2017 will return next August, and I hope to attend again. Jackie and the team who put this event together (including Nicola from Alpha Heroes and Tamara from Shelf Awareness) did a killer job, and I hope it grows and grows! <3
